The day started slowly in Bangkok we enjoyed our Buffet breakfast at leisure (not knowing when our next meal would be). We had a vague plan, go to Bangkok's east bus terminal and either head back to the Thai coast and get across to Ko Chang or go straight into Cambodia. We intended to get the first bus we could and go to either of those places. However, by the time we'd packed up and checked out it was gone midday making our chances of arriving anywhere decent in the day light slim. Nevertheless we trundled on, failing to negotiate with 3 cabs we made our way onto the sky train and eventually arrived at said bus station. Within two minutes we were leaving again on board a bus headed to Trat where we could get a connecting Songthew then boat to Ko Chang. When we arrived on Ko Chang it was pitch black and we still had no where to stay. At all other piers we've been to in Thailand there's been touts trying to sell you accommodation so typically the first time we have nothing booked and arrive in the dark, alas there is not a tout or tourist office in sight. So we took the along with a small gaggle of other backpackers to a place that sounded nice in the Lonely Planet, as we were dropped outside a very closed looking 'paradise palms' our fellow passengers went onto Lonely beach (where there are many backpacker places the driver said) After wandering the dark paths of various resorts that we're sure are buzzing in high season we were about to give up and resign ourselves to the fact we should have stuck with the other back packets. Then we spotted a man!!! Who we asked 'room for rent?' he eventually called someone from one of 'closed' resorts who gave us a good price and a key. We found our bed for the night at 9.30pm.
That would have been the end of the story but we hadn't eaten since breakfast and there was nothing open or around so we headed back to the helpful man who had called the resort for us, and he let us rent a moped for £3 for 24 hours. In the end we had a productive evening, dropping off our laundry and eating out before returning to our deserted resort.
So there you have it we have found ourselves back on a Thai island. We'll stop here for a couple of nights before attempting again to go to Cambodia.

Good work - all points south done. And a good back packeting experience:)
ReplyDeleteWe'll be interested in what Ko Chang is like in the rainy season.
