...those visas you need to get in are going to cost you twice as much as they should please, so hand over your dosh!"
Not quite the words spoken by the border official (you get the gist) but this was unfortunately our very first impression of Cambodia. The borders between Thailand and Cambodia are notoriously strewn with corrupt goings on, but the border at Had Laek (narrowest part of Thailand in the far South East) to Cham Yeam (Cambodia side) was supposed to be a slightly better one. However, after haggling our way down so that we were only paying a few £s over the odds and having a little window closed on me several times, and having got in to the hottest car on earth, we actually found that Cambodia real is very different.
So, our second impressions are that the people are even more friendly than they were in Thailand. And whilst it is very rough round the edges, after a short walk round the sparse town of Koh Kong, we found a little bar on the water, where were given some advice where to go in Cambodia and went for some nosh at Cafe Laurent across from the hotel, accompanied by yet another sunset.
So, our first land border is done, we survived and tomorrow (Sunday) we head to Sihoukanville (spelling?!) also in the south of Cambodia.
