Caught out by the surf

The name Surfer's Paradise, conjures up all sorts of gorgeous images, sadly the place itself is more like paradise lost.

We only stayed one night in this party popping place. Ringed with tall towers, theme parks, casinos and über clubs, this place is teeming with special people seeking something spectacular. We took the time to look around but after realising the city wasn't for us we went to bed early and got the next bus outta there.

A few hours and another time zone later we arrived in the much more tranquil Byron Bay. This is where the tree-huggers and surf dudes hang out. To give you an example of the clientele here, we overhead a chap on the phone telling his pal he might not be able to come out tonight because he didn't have any shoes!

Anyway we had planned to have a surf lesson here, but the swell was apparently too big for beginners. So instead we walked along the coastal path to the lighthouse and watched the professionals tackle the immense waves. Though their skills were nothing compared to the dolphins who also like to surf here. We watched a pod of 10 jumping in and out the waves countless times until a couple caught the ride and travelled all the way along with it, leaping up through the wave, it was incredible to watch. Overall, we've really liked Byron Bay, the sea and sky has been blue and it's a chilled out seaside town with a nice vibe. We were so chilled out here whilst lying on the beach we failed to notice the tide coming in and as we lolled in the sun, suddenly a wave swept underneath us, soaking us, our stuff and washing our shoes out to sea!

Our remaining travelling time in Australia now takes a slightly different turn as (thank the lord) we are done with hostels (we hope!). As we will be staying with friends in both Sydney and Melbourne. First stop, after our last overnight bus is seeing Pete and Rach in Sydney...put the kettle on guys, we're on our way.
